The hypothesis favored is that not all cases can be explained prosaically; some are likely due to the presence of an advanced, non-human or future human intelligence. The strongest evidence is found in the Venezuela event in 1886, published in Scientific American as a letter to the editor. This case is uniquely credible due to a point-by-point description of severe radiation poisoning, nine years before we discovered radiation. There is no known natural phenomenon that can come close to this level of radiation, by orders of magnitude.
