I'm a researcher who's now writing a book about the 1977 California UFO "flap" -- the most significant series of U.S. sightings that is but among the least chronicled. Countless Americans have heard of Roswell of 1947, Betty and Barney Hill of 1961, Travis Walton of 1975, and the Tic-Tac of 2004. But the California Sightings of '77? "The what now?" This endeavor began with me meeting one of the witnesses by chance. He told me an incredible story about a strange craft that hovered over his family's California backyard when he was 11 years old. "Close enough that I could have hit that thing with a baseball," he said when I interviewed him. He closed his amazing yet entirely authentic tale with, "California. 1977. Look into it." The bulk of my research is done. I've examined more than 330 sources -- primarily newspapers, sightings databases, old-time UFOlogist journals and newsletters, and narrative reports from CUFOS, MUFON, NICAP, and NUFORC. This data was boiled down to 144 separate sighting events in which 284 craft were seen. These include 150 orbs, 81 disks, 23 triangles, 11 diamonds, 9 cylinders, 4 pyramids, 4 unknowns, and 2 boomerangs. The 500-page book that will describe all this, "UFO 1977: The Year California Stood Still" will be published just in time for the fiftieth anniversary. My question to you is: Did you see a UFO in California in 1977? If so, and if you remember it well, it could be a book inclusion. Anonymity is guaranteed. So is a judgement-free zone from a fellow experiencer. Please reach out to me via the Contact page of the project's website if you'd like to share your story.
