Encounter in Virginia — 20:40 (03/18/2026)
Time: 21:40 — 22:50 Location: Roughly 60 miles south of DC and 50 miles north of Richmond. My father and I are surrounded by military installations, and we routinely see flights of choppers and heavies overhead. We know what that looks like. We did not bother recording any of this because we figured there is enough useless and blurry shit out there, and we did not think it would help. From 20:40 to 20:50 my father and I watched a very clear line of about a 12-15 lights moving steadily out of the west. No nav lights, no sound, and no transponders on radar. They were too high and fast for choppers and too big for satellites. There were two evident patterns. Some would move east towards us and blink out after about 15 seconds. Others would trace a similar route and then fire off towards the north before blinking out there. One moved in a wild zigzag pattern towards the east and stopped before disappearing. Some appeared slowly faze between red and white but not in any discernible pattern. Definitely not nav lights or beacons. The clouds rolled in and we lost tally. I am confident that these were not airliners on approach for the reasons listed above. In addition, we’re both aviation nerds and we know what the approaches in our area look like. Granted, they obviously change temporarily sometimes, but that would not account for the other discrepancies. Some kind of military movement fit until they started diverging and behaving erratically.
