Mysterious high-speed red streak captured during a thunderstorm in France. Not a bird, bug, or plane. Thoughts?
Time: June 14, 2025, around midnight Location: Ivry-sur-Seine, France Hi everyone, I’m sharing something strange I captured from my balcony. During a heavy thunderstorm, I was filming the sky with my Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus. The main lightning activity was quite far away, at least 20-30km from my position. In the real-time video, this red light passed so fast it was almost invisible to the naked eye—just a "blink". However, when I slowed the footage down using the phone's software, I saw this incredibly straight, bright red streak that appeared to "launch" from near my balcony/position toward the sky. A few details to rule out common explanations: Distance: As mentioned, the storm was 20-30km away, but this streak looks much closer. Not Birds/Bugs: It was raining, and the speed and trajectory don't match any living creature I've seen. Not Planes/Cars: There were no planes flying low at that time, and my balcony faces away from any road that could cause such a reflection. Sound: There was no immediate thunder or sound associated with this specific "launch". Is this some rare atmospheric phenomenon like a Red Sprite or a Horizontal Leader, or is it just a very convincing Lens Flare from the distant lightning? Or something else entirely? I have both the original speed and the slow-motion versions. Would love to hear your technical or paranormal theories! submitted by /u/adiljan621 [link] [comments]
