My thoughts on this: is there the best way to leave something on earth and make sure that it is preserved for millions of years and is still there when you come back? Material would erode and is also not the universal behavior of life. It is easier and more universal to leave information. Most effectively, I would leave information in the DNA of the adaptive organisms found in the environment.
