SciFi not as soft disclosure but as a safe place to explore and game possibilities?
SciFi not as soft disclosure but as a safe place to explore and game possibilities?
Was just reading some of the ufo files and came across this: "Even if we only found tame chemical Martians, or merely the debris from some intraglactic survey mission, it would be a good idea to proceed on the assumption that the human race would finally have found a bigger problem than the ones it has created for itself. There likely is nothing to be done at the moment to prepare for these possibilities (the only body of writing on the subject available in an emergency is science fiction), because no one of consequence is going to take this rubbish seriously unless it happens. At that point, our policy will be determined in the traditional manner of grand panic." here: https://www.war.gov/medialink/ufo/release_1/59_214434_sp_16_[7.18.1963].pdf page 6/6 of the memo from Maxwell W. Hunter, II to Mr. Robert F. Packard Office of International Scientific Affairs so given that sentence even the highest up people at the time realized no one was seriously gaming for disclosure or even discovery so i wonder if scifi isnt for leaking actual details but maybe for exploring concepts implied by details or for playing out how hypothetical scenarios would work someone from the govt goes and prompts the three body problem author "hey write a sci fi story with xyz happening and consider how the population would respond" and authors do their magic of imaginging and creating these human worlds and now the govt has a road map for disclosure informed by the three body problem and can now consider how to deal with the groups of people who inevitably start worshipping the aliens submitted by /u/eaglessoar [link] [comments]
