The “Black Balloon” my boyfriend and I encountered still makes no sense 5 years later
I recently saw a post on Reddit of a UFO. It was round, black, and had yellow writing on the side of it. People commented that it was just a balloon. Well that's when I knew I needed to share my experience. Back in August 2020, my boyfriend and I experienced something so bizarre that we still talk about it to this day. We jokingly call it “The Black Balloon,” but honestly… I still don’t believe it was just a balloon. This happened around 3:00–3:30 AM. I had a 360° security camera facing the front of my house, so I could see most of the street. While watching the camera feed, I noticed something small moving uphill in the gutter near my neighbor’s house. At first I couldn’t tell what it was because it was dark outside, but I immediately knew something was weird because my street slopes upward. Whatever this thing was, it was moving uphill on its own. I showed my boyfriend and he couldn’t figure it out either, so I convinced him to go outside and look. A few minutes later he came back saying: “I can see it moving… kind of side to side. Like a penguin.” Obviously that made no sense, so we both went outside to investigate. As we walked up the street, we could finally see it was small, black, and perfectly round. About the size of a cantaloupe. Then it stopped moving. So did we. A second later, it started moving toward us. We backed up while laughing nervously, but then it sped up and we both turned around and RAN back to my driveway. The second we stopped and turned around, the thing stopped too. At this point we were confused but also laughing because we realized we had just run away from what looked like a black ball. Then it turned around and continued uphill again like nothing happened. So of course… we followed it AGAIN. Same exact thing happened. As soon as we got close, it stopped, turned around, and came directly at us. Again we ran back to the driveway, and again it stopped at the exact same spot before calmly rolling away. At this point we started trying to rationalize it. Maybe someone was pranking us with a remote-control toy or something on a string. Then things got REALLY weird. The object started crossing the street toward the main road like it was leaving the neighborhood. We ran after it, and the second we did, it made a sharp U-turn and came at us faster than before. I looked back while running and saw this thing literally BOUNCING after us. Not rolling. BOUNCING. We sprinted inside the house, locked the doors, and watched it through the windows until it rolled back into the gutter. For the next several hours, we monitored it through my security camera. It would stop moving anytime we got close to it. At one point it hid underneath a parked car for hours. Every time we tried approaching it, it would retreat farther underneath the car like it knew we were there. Eventually, around sunrise, my boyfriend managed to record it on his phone as it bounced backward underneath the car the second we came outside. And the movement looked wrong. Not like wind. Not random. Later that morning, after obsessing over this thing for nearly 6 hours, it finally rolled out into the gutter in front of my driveway and just sat there. We slowly approached it and finally got a good look. It was a partially deflated black balloon with yellow writing that said: “Congrats 2020.” We started laughing so hard we were crying because there was NO WAY this thing had just spent the entire night psychologically terrorizing us. But somehow it got even stranger. While watching the security footage afterward, we noticed the balloon would rock itself back and forth to gain momentum before rolling. We also noticed it seemed aware of movement around it. At one point, two people walked dogs past the balloon. One of the dogs suddenly stopped and looked around nervously near it before continuing on. Later, my son pulled out of the driveway in his car, and the balloon rolled out of the way right before he backed up. When he came home later, we watched it quickly move away from the driveway again moments before he turned in. The craziest part is that we actually have several videos from that night — both from my security camera and from our phones. In one clip you can literally see it bounce back underneath the parked car the moment we approach it. Even now, rewatching the footage gives us the same uneasy feeling because the movements just don’t seem natural. I know how insane this sounds. Maybe it really was just wind and coincidence mixed with sleep deprivation and paranoia. But after watching this thing for almost six straight hours, seeing it react to us repeatedly, and literally having it chase us multiple times… No one can convince me it was “just a balloon.” submitted by /u/BeautifulCrew3540 [link] [comments]
