December 29th, 1980. A two-lane road in the East Texas Piney Woods. 3 people in an Oldsmobile Cutlass driving home from dinner. A 51-year-old woman, her 57-year-old friend, and a 7-year-old boy. A massive diamond-shaped object appears directly over the road, shooting flames from the bottom like a blowtorch. The heat softens the vinyl dashboard. The door handle is too hot to touch with bare hands. 23 military helicopters arrive in formation and escort the object south over the horizon. Within hours, all 3 are violently ill. Within days, the driver, Betty Cash, is unrecognizable. Blisters across her face. Hair falling out in clumps. Eyes swollen shut. A dermatologist confirms radiation damage. Her doctor compares the severity to being 3 to 5 miles from the epicenter of a nuclear blast. She develops breast cancer. She can't receive standard radiation treatment because she's already been irradiated by something nobody can identify. She sues the U.S. government for $20 million. They dismiss the case on a technicality: she can't prove which specific agency was responsible. Betty Cash dies on December 29th, 1998. The 18th anniversary. She was 69 years old. Nobody was ever held accountable.
